According to FAIR (which provides numerous examples), “Media outlets are creating a climate for a US military attack on Iran by hyping the idea that Iran is an imminent threat to peace, by failing to offer evidence that calls the US’s accusations against Iran into question, by amplifying warmongers’ voices and by naturalizing America’s supposed right to spy on every country on earth.” The power of the corporate media to shape public opinion is undeniable. With great sophistication they even provide a range of “left” and “right” media outlets to reinforce the limits of acceptable dissent. To quote Noam Chomsky: “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.”
Even so, there are the voices of reason among the US population, people who know the history of US aggressions based on lies (which can even be found in mainstream sources), who recognise the old pattern and can predict with some certainty the course and the outcome of Trump’s provocative action. They are able to speak the truth about it. Chris Hedges, a former Middle East bureau chief for The New York Times, has laid out a likely scenario for the outcome of the Trump administration's madness in "War With Iran." Clearly, there are others who see the truth, as witnessed by the number of people in the US who turned out to demonstrate against the oncoming war. But their voices are barely heard in today's cacophonous postmodern discourse. Many truth tellers are being systematically banned from social media. Aware of the potential for even more serious consequences for those who dare to go beyond the regurgitation of “acceptable opinion,” many, in fact most of us, are self-censoring. After all, who wants to speak out when nobody is listening? When speaking out (or leaking out) has become dangerous.
At this time, Iran has launched a missile attack on a US-Iraqi air base, and has threatened to target other countries hosting US forces if they launch attacks on Iran. Meanwhile, Trump, who earlier tweeted "if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have.....targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD," has since agreed not to commit this war crime and to abide by international law. There is no word that Iran itself is being hit very fast and very hard, but the Pentagon has confirmed that Iran has launched "more than a dozen ballistic missiles"' at US targets in Iraq. Although Trump was expected to address the nation, the White House has announced that he won't be speaking tonight.
Goodnight all. Rest well and be ready for the belated response from Trump who, it seems, will be speaking in the morning. He must have needed a good night's sleep after all that warmongering.
